Broccoli Seeds Recall: If You Bought These on Amazon This Summer, the FDA Found Salmonella in Them

If you’ve been growing your own broccoli sprouts at home, this one is worth a trip to your pantry.

The FDA confirmed Salmonella contamination in a specific lot of broccoli sprouting seeds sold only on Amazon, and the seed distributor has recalled it.

This isn’t a “just in case” recall. FDA lab testing actually found Salmonella in the seeds themselves.

What Was Recalled

EAK Distribution LLC, based in Casper, Wyoming, recalled its Home Grown brand Green Sprouting Calabrese Broccoli Seeds, sold in 8-ounce bags.

Check the lot code embossed on the top seal of the bag: AUG172026. The product’s UPC is 850056627443.

These seeds were sold exclusively through Amazon.com, nationwide, between August 20 and September 18, 2026.

If your bag doesn’t have that lot code, it isn’t part of this recall.

Why It Was Recalled

Here’s where this gets more serious than a typical “might be contaminated” recall.

FDA investigators were already looking into a separate, ongoing outbreak tied to broccoli sprouts making people sick. While tracing that outbreak back through the supply chain, they identified that a sprout grower involved had used seeds from this exact lot.

FDA then tested samples of the seed lot directly, and on September 28, 2026, confirmed Salmonella contamination in the seeds.

Salmonella can cause fever, diarrhea, and stomach cramps, and in more serious cases, it can be life-threatening, especially for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and anyone with a weakened immune system.

No illnesses have been reported specifically tied to this seed lot as of the recall announcement. But sprouting seeds are a known, recurring source of Salmonella and E. coli outbreaks, because the warm, moist conditions used to sprout seeds at home are also ideal conditions for bacteria to multiply.

What You Should Do

If you bought Home Grown Green Sprouting Calabrese Broccoli Seeds from Amazon with lot code AUG172026:

  • Do not use the seeds to grow sprouts.
  • Do not eat any sprouts you’ve already grown from this lot.
  • Throw the bag away, don’t compost it or give it away.
  • Contact Amazon for a refund through your order history.

If you have questions, EAK Distribution can be reached at 541-306-4278, Monday through Friday, 8am to 5pm Pacific time.

Is This Recall a Big Deal?

Distribution was nationwide, but only through Amazon, so this is narrower than a recall that hit every grocery store in the country. Home gardeners and home-sprouting enthusiasts are the people most likely to have this specific product.

What makes it worth paying attention to either way: this isn’t a precautionary recall based on a complaint. The FDA’s own lab testing confirmed Salmonella in the seeds, and it’s directly connected to an active, ongoing outbreak investigation into broccoli sprouts.
