Breaking Up with Sugar: Let’s Take Back Control

Hey friend,

Let’s talk about sugar. That sweet, addictive little ingredient that sneaks into everything — from desserts to sauces to drinks we don’t even think twice about. It’s everywhere, and if you’re anything like me, it can feel almost impossible to resist.

We know the deal: overindulging in sugar doesn’t just mess with our weight, it impacts our health on a deeper level. It can contribute to insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and, from my years working in oncology, I’ve seen firsthand how cancer cells thrive on sugar. To be clear, I’m not saying sugar causes cancer, but minimizing sugar intake is often part of a healthier lifestyle, especially during treatment.

So why is it so hard to stop? Honestly, sugar is like a drug. If you’ve ever cut it out completely, you know what happens when you go back — suddenly everything tastes too sweet. It’s like our bodies have to detox and reset. And yet, even knowing all this, we keep going back for more.

If you’re someone who can set limits and stick to them, I applaud you. But if you’re on a weight loss journey like I am, there’s likely been a moment (or many) where saying “no” just didn’t happen. And that’s okay — what matters is that we keep trying to do better.

So, here’s the challenge: let’s aim to stay under 85 grams of sugar per day this week. That includes everything — snacks, bread, sauces, the works. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about being mindful and realistic.

Let’s give our bodies a break from sugar overload and see how we feel by the end of the week. We’re in this together — let’s crush it!
